About the Job:


Working under moderate supervision, assist with any and all necessary tasks related to the Farm Food Program and any other related endeavors and projects, including representing the farm at on and off-campus functions. The associate will utilize understanding to inform and implement the basic principles behind and concerning sustainable and regenerative agriculture. Develop, track and record relevant data regarding food production. Assist other farm staff in the daily operations of university farm as needed. Assist with special events and functions as needed. 


Essential Functions:


  • Maintain greenhouse, back gardens and cold frame production. Including maintenance of Farm Food Program seed catalog, vegetable plugs, herbs, and related equipment, as well as research related plants and materials. Water and irrigate on schedule, perform pest control and make certain the greenhouse (tables, floors, containers, production office, etc.) are kept clean and free of disease. (30%)
  • Assist and materially participate in the production of food crops both indoors and out. (25%)
  • Develop, track and record relevant data regarding food production including but not limited to mushroom production, high tunnel food production, greenhouse production, irrigation systems, rainwater collection systems, beekeeping, hydroponic systems and field production. (10%)


Nonessential Functions: 


  • Provide basic information and assist with the instruction of visiting groups. (5%)
  • Assist with the recruitment of volunteers for the food program and represent the farm at events. (5%)
  • Assist with volunteer workdays. (5%)
  • Assist with the training and supervision of summer student workers. (5%)
  • Enforce university farm rules and regulations for visitors. (5%)
  • Must be available to work evenings, holidays, and weekends rotations, as required (5%)
  • Equipment maintenance and repairs (5%)
  • Perform other duties as assigned. Help with deliveries.  Assist with special events and functions and with the parking of cars during large events. (<1%)




  • Department: Daily contact with full and part-time farm staff.
  • University: Regular contact with faculty members and students who teach and do research at the farm. 
  • External: Weekly contact farm visitors and delivery people
  • Students: Work with summer students and student volunteers




  • Experience: 2 to 3 years of experience with the growing of food and ornamental crops preferred.
  • Education/Licensing: High school education required. Classes in horticulture preferred. Valid driver’s license.


Required Skills:


  • Must be a productive worker in all tasks, especially as they relate to food production
  • Must have excellent social skills for interaction between and among faculty, staff, students and farm visitors
  • Proficiency with email communications and basic computer programs such as excel and word
  • Able to work with tools relative to food production
  • Must be able to recognize problems and be able to communicate them to supervisor, specifically insect and disease problems with food and ornamental crops.
  • Must be familiar with food crop growth cycles and know the difference between cold weather crops and warm weather crops.
  • Must be willing to work with honeybees.
  • Must be willing to work with composting operations.
  • Ability to drive and operate a range of vehicles, including 4-wheel drive vehicles, standard transmission vehicles, off-road vehicles and tractors with implements including backhoe, tillers, mowers, etc.
  • Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  • Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.


Working Conditions:


This is a full-time, 37.5 hours per week position with weekend rotation (Saturday and Sunday). Must be available to work evenings, holidays and weekends, as required. Daily outdoor work is required and should be expected regardless of weather conditions. Occasionally climb ladders and work at heights. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. Must drive vehicles for the job.
