The Policy & Trade Branch provides strategic thinking, analysis and policy advice across a number of primary sectors, such as agriculture, horticulture, forestry and fisheries. The Branch works on a number of regulatory systems, such as animal welfare, biosecurity and food safety systems, has a busy work programme in relation to the development of skills, responding to environmental and climate change issues, and negotiating market access arrangements and oversees international government-to-government relationships. Our work is varied, important and high profile, sitting at the nexus between economic, environmental and community wellbeing.
Mō tō mātou rōpū – About the team
The primary sector is configuring itself to lead in the context of significant change over the next 10 years. The Adaptive Farming and Communities team sits in the Primary Sector Futures Directorate which is focused on supporting the transition of the primary sectors to achieve higher-value while being more environmentally sustainable. Our key areas of work are focused around – supporting the development of an integrating farm planning system; building the capability and capacity of the advisory system; and growing the evidence base on new approaches to farming such as regenerative agriculture. We are also charged with providing advice and supporting the public sector to understand and address the unique needs of New Zealand’s rural communities.
Kōrero mō te tūranga – About the role
We are looking for a Policy Analyst to come and join us. We are looking for an Analyst that can keep abreast of new thinking and trends, have a keenness to tackle big questions, is comfortable working in a large and busy team, and can work collaboratively with other teams within MPI and across government, and can work collaboratively with external stakeholders.

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who can come up to speed quickly to contribute to our work. To be successful in this role, you will need some of the following attributes:
- The ability to identify insights from information, think critically, communicate core elements of an issue or proposal, and explore options;
- Have a broad perspective and have the ability to make informed connections between work areas and issues;
- The ability to adjust approach to written work to meet the needs of different audiences;
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to effectively engage and collaborate with a wide range of people;
- The ability to manage your effort to deliver work to a high standard and on time, both independently and with the support of others.
