Description

geoFootprint combines data from satellite imagery with environmental metrics to visualize the environmental footprints of key commodity crops on an interactive world map at a resolution of 10×10 km worldwide. It is the first-ever platform to leverage satellite imagery with leading-edge environmental footprinting science.

It is developed with the idea that spatially-explicit footprints, calculated at global scale, can facilitate and accelerate our capacity to measure, understand and monitor how different agricultural practices can accelerate the transition toward more sustainable food, fiber and material production systems.

Use the tool to identify and compare the main drivers of your environmental footprint, including irrigation, land-use change and field emissions from fertilizer use. Also see how field management practices, local soil and climate conditions, and upstream activities translate into environmental metrics on climate change, water availability, water quality, soil health, and risk of biodiversity loss.

This is a multi-stakeholder initiative launched by Quantis, and built collaboratively in partnership with more than 25 public, private and academic stakeholders  — including the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), General Mills, Mars, Nestlé Research, and Unilever. With its global overview of crop footprints, geoFootprint closes the gap between the action needed to make agriculture more sustainable, and the knowledge required to pursue it.
