Description

The new IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology is a comprehensive classification framework for Earth’s ecosystems that integrates their functional and compositional features. This new typology will help identify the ecosystems that are most critical for biodiversity conservation, research, management and human wellbeing into the future.

In this tool, you can:

  • Explore the Global Ecosystem Typology. Start by selecting a Realm of interest, then drill down to learn more about its Biomes and Ecosystem Functional Groups.
  • Analyse functional groups by area. Identify occurrence of functional groups by country or custom area.

The content for this website has been drawn from the IUCN Global Ecosystem Typology (v2.0). For more information about the background and methods of the tool, view the tool’s website.
